Flexibility training is just as
important as cardiovascular exercise and strength training. Many people do
not realize that increased flexibility enhances athletic performance and
helps delay age-related aches and pains. There are
a variety of stretching exercises, tailored to different activities, which
help to improve flexibility. It is important to incorporate stretching into
your exercise routine, whether it is training for a marathon, taking an
aerobics class, swimming, playing tennis or going on a 2-mile walk.
Stretching before a workout helps people avoid muscle or joint injury and
prevents pain in the lower back, knees, shins, and other areas. The body
responds very well to stretching after a workout, too, because the body is
warm and flexible. Do not bounce while stretching or the muscles will
involuntarily contract. Gradually and slowly stretch for 20-30 seconds and
make sure to stop when it hurts. |
