Spinning is a high-intensity
indoor stationary cycling program that has become very popular in health
clubs. Participants ride their bikes at levels of varying intensity, from
hills to valleys, usually led by an energetic instructor accompanied by
upbeat music. Like other aerobics programs, spinning is great for burning
calories and promoting cardiovascular fitness. Unlike aerobics, it is a
low-impact activity that is easier on the joints. However, the bicycle seats
can be extremely uncomfortable. Some clubs sell gel cushions to bring with
you for working out, and also recommend bike shorts with padding. Until you
experience the pain of a spinning cycle seat, you may not realize what an
important investment cushions and pads can be! Beginners should be extremely
careful not to overdo a spinning workout or they will quickly give up. Start
at a lower-intensity level and work up as you get stronger. |
